Geladaria Neveiros

Geladaria Neveiros, Porto

Geladaria Neveiros is the oldest ice cream parlor in Porto. It all started with Alda Freiria, who moved from Lisbon to Porto and decided to try and open an ice cream parlor. It all went well and she conquered her clients with delicious ice cream flavors. In 1992 she sold the patent to Adelina Guedes and the ice creams are still made as when Alda opened the ice cream parlor.

One of the things I like the most about Neveiros ice creams is that they have seasonal flavors. I’m a huge fan of their persimmon ice cream. It’s so good! It tastes exactly like the fruit! I’ve always been addicted to their caramel, strawberry, raspberry and lemon ice creams. These four are my all times favorite. Just a word of advice: the lemon ice cream has a really sharp flavor!

Along with the classic flavors – chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, caramel, lemon and raspberry -, they also have gourmet flavors. What does coconut-chili pepper or pineapple-basil or even white chocolate-cardamom sound? Feeling adventurous enough to try it? I did try the coconut-chili pepper and liked it! It’s hot!

I’ll let you in on a little secret: when I was little, about 5 or 6, I used to go to the place where the ice cream was made. It was like entering a magic kingdom (a bit like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!). So much ice cream. So many flavors. I could stay there eating ice cream the whole day. I must confess, I’m actually addicted to ice cream. It’s probably my mum’s fault ’cause it was the only thing she could hold in her stomach when she was pregnant with me! And the ice cream she craved was from Neveiros!

Neveiros ice cream parlor is located (literally) a few steps away from Porto’s Library. It’s also really close to Casa Guedes and Duas de Letra, so if you’re in the area, don’t forget to stop by and try the ice cream. They also have a smaller parlor in Foz, at Centro Comercial Foz. If you’re in Porto’s downtown, you won’t be far from Geladaria Neveiros. It’s in a walking distance from Santa Catarina street, São Bento’s train Station and Majestic Café. Take you’re ice cream and take a walk in São Lázaro’s garden, right across the street.
